Sani Pass Tours

The Sani Pass is a legendary mountain road that starts at 1544 metres and climbs 1332m to an altitude of 2876m above sea level. This iconic passageway connects South Africa to the mountainous kingdom of Lesotho. Whether you’re a 4x4 enthusiast, or just wanting to experience the breathtaking scenery of the southern Berg, or wanting to visit the “Kingdom in the Sky” and experience Basotho culture, doing a trip up the Sani Pass is a must when in the area.

Highlights include having a drink & meal at the “highest pub in Africa”, visiting a Basotho village for an interactive cultural experience, or getting that perfect photo from one of the ‘switchbacks’. For group tours we recommend either Major Adventures or Roof of Africa. If you have your own 4x4 and would like an official tour guide and 4x4 coach who has experience of the pass, please contact Pat Jolly on 082 055 7923.

Mountain Biking

Sani Spoors offers a number of different MTB trails that range from leisurely and relaxing, to a 17km 450m climb at altitude that will make you really enjoy the exhilarating downhill forest single tracks after the ascent.

The dairy farms on which the trails run, are dotted along the uMzimkulu River and its tributaries with the cows feeding in the green pastures, with the backdrop of the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Mountains. It really is a magnificent setting to be out in the crisp fresh air riding a mountain bike.

Sani Spoors was started by a few local farmers who are passionate about mountain biking and the beautiful area that they live in. Their vision was to create a system of trails on the working farms, catering for all skill levels, that will allow riders to enjoy and “share” the area while co-existing with the on-going farming operations.

Horse Trails

Right next-door to The Old Hatchery, Khotso has become synonymous with horse riding in the Southern Drakensberg. Open all year round, they offer anything from a 1 hour ride to a full day ride over plains, hills and rivers on Khotso land. No matter what your skill level on a horse, their experienced grooms will guide you to panoramic views prioritising your comfort and safety.

Khotso also offers a three day off-road, off-grid horseback adventure in Lesotho climbing the breathtaking Bushmans Nek mountain pass right through the heart of the Sehlabathebe National Park, exploring parts of two countries most tourists never get the chance to see.

Unique hiking trails are also on offer where there is an opportunity to see indigenous antelope, birds, rare plants, baboons and dassies.

Kenmo Lake

Kenmo Lake Lake, located about 6kms north of Himeville, is a tranquil haven where you can truly relax and get away from, well… everything. It’s the perfect spot for a picnic, or simply a casual stroll along the lakeshore and under the trees. Autumn is especially spectacular where the trees show off a host of changing colours, and at springtime there is a burst of purple, orange and white as the flowers take centre stage.

Every year around May the local historical society hosts the Kenmo Lake Picnic & Concert featuring live classical music, traditional games and a host of fun things for the whole family.
